Tech industry struggling to align aspirations with sustainability planning

The global technology industry is facing a significant challenge in aligning its aspirations with sustainability planning, as revealed by new research. A majority of engineers and executives within the sector believe that they can make a meaningful impact in combating climate change through their roles. However, the industry is lacking sustainable technologies necessary to achieve this goal. According to TE Connectivity's industrial technology index, around 1,000 professionals in countries like the US, China, Germany, India, and Japan, working in various sectors including data, cloud computing, and energy solutions, feel that the industry is falling behind in developing sustainable technologies.

The survey highlighted that 80% of engineers are eager to address the climate crisis through their work, with 77% actively seeking roles that prioritize climate change. Interestingly, younger generations, particularly Generation Z and millennials, place a higher emphasis on sustainability, with 53% considering it extremely important. Despite the growing interest in green jobs, there is a skills gap in the industry, with less than 15% of LinkedIn users possessing relevant experience for careers in the green economy. The research also pointed out challenges in ensuring sustainability across operations and supply chains, with a lack of clear direction from leaders on achieving sustainability goals.
