Ottawa funds AI project to combat misinformation at Université de Montréal

Canadian Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge announced financial support for an AI project at Université de Montréal to combat disinformation. The project, in partnership with Mila and McGill University, aims to develop a website to detect and counter misinformation. The tool will utilize a corpus of knowledge and consult reliable sources to assess the veracity of text.

Lead researcher Jean-François Godbout explained that the application will be integrated into web browsers to detect disinformation. The project team is compiling a list of trustworthy sources, including government data, press agencies, and media outlets like Radio-Canada and TVA. Minister St-Onge emphasized the importance of supporting credible organizations like UdeM and Mila in the ethical development of AI.
