New AI Legal Ethics Rules Coming: Texas State Bar Drafting Recommendations on Artificial Intelligence

The State Bar of Texas is drafting recommendations on the ethical use of artificial intelligence in the legal field. The project was mandated by the 2023 state bar president, Cindy Tisdale, and an interim report was submitted to the Committee on Disciplinary Rules and Referenda. The task force, known as TRAIL, has been conducting research for a year to develop these guidelines.

Joshua Weaver, a staff liaison to the Taskforce for Responsible AI in the Law, provided a progress report to the Committee on Disciplinary Rules and Referenda. The final rules on the use of AI in law will be formulated by the committee for consideration by bar members and the Texas Supreme Court. This initiative aims to establish standards for the ethical implementation of AI technology in legal practices.
