Tripathi, who is also the co-chair of the HHS AI Task Force, will bring his expertise to guide the agency's AI efforts in the interim. The previous CAIO, Greg Singleton, remains part of the agency's IT workforce.
Under President Joe Biden's AI executive order, agencies are required to designate CAIOs to oversee the use of AI technology and manage associated risks. The move to appoint Tripathi as acting CAIO aligns with this directive, with agencies like HHS and the Department of Homeland Security already having CAIO positions. The position of CAIO at HHS has been in place since 2021, with Singleton taking over from the initial appointee in 2022.
