Founders out, new investor in at slimmed-down at AI firm Soul Machines

Soul Machines, a company known for AI-powered virtual people for customer services, has seen its founders Greg Cross and Mark Sagar depart. The firm has significantly reduced its staff, with early investors like Mercedes-Benz holding much smaller stakes now. Major customers like Air New Zealand and ANZ have also moved away from the company.

The San Francisco-based Julie Kim has taken over as the CEO of Soul Machines, following the departure of Greg Cross. The company's headcount has decreased from 253 to 70 employees, indicating a significant downsizing. Soul Machines is facing challenges in the AI market, with increased competition from big players like OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, and AWS.
