Deep Dive: How Hong Kong police use surveillance cameras for traffic management, crime prevention

Hong Kong police have launched a new AI-driven traffic management system in Kwun Tong, utilizing surveillance cameras to monitor real-time traffic conditions. This system, known as the Smart Traffic Management System, integrates data from the Transport Department to optimize traffic light adjustments and alert drivers about accidents. The initiative aims to enhance traffic flow while ensuring that personal data is not collected, as the system will not use facial recognition technology.

The project received funding of HK$6.8 million from the Innovation and Technology Bureau and is set to launch in the third quarter of this year. Eleven camera sets have been installed across nine main streets, focusing solely on traffic data collection, with all data being deleted after 28 days. If successful, the system may be expanded to other areas, showcasing a significant step towards modernizing traffic management in Hong Kong.

• AI technology enhances traffic management and accident alerts in Hong Kong.

• Surveillance cameras will not use facial recognition, ensuring privacy.
