CMA looks deeper into Microsoft's AI hirings

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) is investigating Microsoft's recent hiring of two former co-founders of AI specialist Inflection AI. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announced the hiring of Mustafa Suleyman and Karén Simonyan, with Simonyan also serving as the startup's chief scientist. Inflection AI received a funding boost of $625m from Microsoft in a non-exclusive deal to host its AI model on Azure.

The CMA's investigation is part of a broader look at tech giants' influence in the UK's AI sector. Microsoft's strategic moves in AI, including investments in OpenAI and partnerships with companies like Inflection AI, are under scrutiny. The CMA is assessing whether these deals comply with UK merger rules and if they impact competition in the UK market.
