Writer's new AI models are scary good at healthcare and finance tasks

San Francisco-based AI company Writer has launched two specialized large language models (LLMs), Palmyra-Med-70b and Palmyra-Fin-70b, tailored for the healthcare and financial services industries. These models are available as open-source offerings on major AI platforms like Nvidia, Baseten, and Hugging Face. Writer claims that these specialized models outperform larger, generalized AI models like GPT-4 in domain-specific tasks.

The healthcare model, Palmyra-Med-70b, achieved an average accuracy of 85.9% across all medical benchmarks in zero-shot attempts, surpassing competitors like Med-PaLM-2. In the financial sector, Writer's Palmyra-Fin-70b model is the first AI model capable of passing the CFA Level III exam, a challenging test in the investment management profession. Writer's open-source strategy aligns with the trend in the AI industry towards transparency and safety in regulated industries.
