South Africa publishes national AI policy framework

The department of communications & digital technologies has published a national policy framework for artificial intelligence and is seeking feedback from stakeholders. This policy framework is the first step in developing a national AI policy for South Africa. Once finalized, the AI policy will serve as the foundational basis for creating AI regulations and potentially an AI Act in South Africa.

The holistic approach of the policy framework aims to ensure that AI serves as a catalyst for a digital society, digital economy, and digital inclusion in South Africa. By embracing AI's transformative potential, the framework seeks to address pressing national challenges and leverage opportunities across all sectors of the economy. The document emphasizes the importance of ethical AI, transparency, and the mitigation of biases to align with South Africa's societal values.
