'Profound disappointment' over Budget's AI funding

Tech industry associations have expressed disappointment over the federal budget's minimal investment in AI, with only $8 million provided over five years. The majority of the funding will support the National AI Centre and AI expert advisory body, signaling a shift away from the national science agency. Concerns have been raised about Australia falling behind in AI innovation and competitiveness.

The Australian Computer Society (ACS) welcomed the AI funding but emphasized the need for more support to address challenges and opportunities in emerging technologies. On the other hand, the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) criticized the small funding amount, highlighting the risk of Australia becoming uncompetitive and unproductive in the global AI race. Despite the disappointment, DIGI, representing large tech firms, acknowledged the importance of AI policy development for job creation and economic growth.
