ORNL, Vanderbilt University Partnering to Develop Methods Ensuring Reliability of AI Systems for Defense Applications

Oak Ridge National Laboratory announced a partnership with Vanderbilt University to develop methods of training and testing artificial intelligence to accelerate the adoption of AI-powered systems by the Department of Defense. The collaboration aims to produce AI assurance methods that guarantee functionality and resilience of AI systems in challenging mission-relevant environments.

Initial efforts will focus on assisting the U.S. Air Force in maximizing the use of autonomous vehicles. ORNL Director Stephen Streiffer expressed enthusiasm for advancing the Defense Department's deployment of AI-based systems, while Vanderbilt Chancellor Daniel Diermeier highlighted the importance of ensuring the safety, accuracy, and reliability of AI-enabled programs.
