NSW gov asked to employ multiple 'chief AI officers'

The NSW government has been urged to appoint 'chief AI officers' at both whole-of-government and department levels following an inquiry into AI in the state. The recommendations include establishing a central 'NSW Office of AI', conducting a regulatory gap analysis, and maintaining a register of automated decision-making systems. The state already plays a significant role in national AI policy development with its AI assurance framework.

The committee suggests embedding AI across NSW government departments with oversight from personnel, guardrails, and transparency measures. It proposes appointing a chief AI officer for the whole government, supported by officers in various departments. Additionally, the government is advised to consider creating a 'NSW Office of AI' to ensure responsible AI use in service delivery.
