New way to detect when ChatGPT is being used to cheat

Researchers at Florida State University have developed a novel technique to identify when ChatGPT is being used to cheat on tests, particularly multiple-choice exams. Their findings, published in The Journal of Chemical Education, highlight the rapid rise of ChatGPT and its implications for academic integrity. The challenge lies in distinguishing between human and AI-generated responses, especially since students increasingly utilize AI for assistance in their studies.

The study specifically focused on chemistry exams, employing statistical methods to analyze the differences in responses between human test-takers and ChatGPT. The researchers found that while high-performing students answered both easy and hard questions correctly, ChatGPT exhibited a pattern of answering easy questions incorrectly and hard ones correctly. This discrepancy serves as a potential indicator of AI involvement, raising concerns about the integrity of assessments in educational settings.
