AI voice cloning technology has advanced significantly, enabling the creation of realistic audio from brief samples. While this innovation has beneficial uses in areas like audiobooks and marketing, it also poses risks for scams and fraud. Consumer Reports evaluated six leading voice cloning tools to assess their safeguards against unauthorized voice cloning.
The evaluation revealed that four out of six tools lacked adequate protections to prevent unauthorized voice cloning. Only Descript and Resemble AI implemented additional measures to ensure consent, such as requiring users to record a consent statement. Recommendations include enhancing security protocols and emphasizing the companies' responsibilities to prevent misuse.
