Kennesaw State researcher earns NIH grant to investigate health factors related to obesity using AI

Kennesaw State University assistant professor Liang Zhao has received a $51,747 NIH AIM-AHEAD grant to investigate obesity in rural areas using artificial intelligence. The research focuses on social determinants of health (SDOH), which significantly influence health outcomes and disparities. With obesity rates in rural areas being 6.2 times higher than in urban settings, this study aims to identify key factors contributing to this issue.

Zhao's project will utilize the OCHIN database, which compiles health records for over six million patients, to analyze data and inform policy reforms. The goal is to create a predictive model that can guide improvements in rural healthcare services, which often lack adequate resources. By collaborating with institutions like the Morehouse School of Medicine and Harvard Medical School, Zhao aims to develop innovative solutions tailored to the needs of rural communities.

• AI will analyze health determinants contributing to obesity in rural areas.

• Collaboration with healthcare institutions aims to improve rural health outcomes.
