Indian AI firms may face extra costs as EU's AI Act kicks in

The European Union has approved the world's first law governing AI development, which sets compliance timelines and regulations based on the risk posed by each AI system. Indian startups and businesses providing AI systems in the EU may face increased compliance burdens and costs, impacting their competitiveness. The Act is expected to come into force by the end of June.

Companies like Yellow AI, Sigtuple, Qure AI, and Cropin AI from India have a presence in the region and are eyeing international expansion, including in key markets like Europe. The Act requires risk assessments within six months to determine compliance categories, potentially leading to substantial costs and administrative burdens for companies. The short compliance window could be challenging for small and medium-sized enterprises, with penalties for non-compliance reaching up to €1,50,00,000 or 3% of total turnover.
