IIT-Bhubaneswar develops hybrid technology using AI for weather forecasting

IIT-Bhubaneswar has created a hybrid technology that combines the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model with deep learning techniques to improve weather prediction accuracy. This innovative approach specifically targets the forecasting of heavy rainfall events, aiming to provide timely alerts. The research was conducted in Assam and Odisha, regions known for their complex terrains and vulnerability to severe flooding.

The hybrid model has shown to nearly double the prediction accuracy compared to traditional methods, with a lead time of up to 96 hours. This advancement is crucial for disaster management and public safety, especially in flood-prone areas. The study's findings, published in IEEE Xplore, highlight the potential for similar models to be developed for other challenging terrains in India.
