Hong Kong's technology minister, Sun Dong, has unveiled a strategic plan to enhance the city's AI supercomputing capabilities, aiming for a total of 15,000 petaflops by 2030. This initiative includes a significant contribution from private institutions and a more aggressive approach to the Innovation and Technology Venture Fund to attract investments in start-ups. The government is also set to provide 5,000 petaflops in the next couple of years to support local economic development and research.
The AI Supercomputing Centre is expected to play a pivotal role, with an initial capacity of 3,000 petaflops by 2026, which could process nearly 10 billion images per hour. Financial Secretary Paul Chan has allocated HK$3 billion to encourage local entities to leverage this computing power for scientific advancements. The Northern Metropolis project aims to transform a vast area into a hub for innovation and technology, although it faces legal challenges regarding environmental concerns.
