HCA Healthcare readies for AI rollout in ERs

Full Article

Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare is preparing to implement a generative AI tool in its emergency departments, as reported by a technology vendor. The health system initiated a pilot program in 2023 using ambient clinical documentation from Augmedix and Google's generative AI to draft EHR notes for ED visits, with positive feedback from about 80 physicians at four hospitals. Augmedix's CEO mentioned plans to expand the technology, developed based on millions of patient encounters, to approximately 184 EDs in the fall.

The collaboration between Augmedix and HCA Healthcare aims to optimize AI products for enhanced efficiency in healthcare settings. The timeline for the rollout is contingent on implementing appropriate change management programs at each hospital and transitioning to Meditech's Expanse EHR system. While the expansion is not directly tied to Meditech Expanse, HCA Healthcare intends to extend the use of the AI technology to more hospitals in the future.
