DOJ recommends harsher sentences AI-enhanced crimes

The United States Department of Justice (DOJ) is pushing for stricter penalties for crimes involving artificial intelligence, urging the Sentencing Commission to update guidelines accordingly. The proposed changes would not only target crimes committed with AI but also those aided by basic algorithms. Current guidelines only cover sophisticated systems, but the new recommendations aim to hold individuals accountable for using AI in criminal activities.

The DOJ's recommendations could lead to enhanced penalties for certain crimes, particularly white-collar offenses, if the alleged perpetrators are convicted. Sentencing enhancements would give judges more leeway in determining the severity of penalties, potentially adding extra penalties for AI-related crimes. Despite these developments at the individual criminal level, there is still a lack of comprehensive regulation for AI developers and publishers, with companies facing legal challenges over data usage in AI training.
