Deep learning links lung shape differences and COVID-19 severity

A research team from Emory AI.Health utilized deep learning to identify significant lung damage and deformities in COVID-19 patients, as revealed in a study published in the Journal of Computers in Medicine and Biology. The study highlighted the impact of disease severity on lung structure, emphasizing the need for understanding and treating COVID-19 complications.

The research involved analyzing chest CT scans from 3,230 patients, categorizing them into healthy, mild-COVID-19, and severe COVID-19 groups to explore lung shape differences. By employing a 3D residual convolutional network, the team mapped out lung deformations associated with COVID-19 infection, regardless of severity. These findings could provide insights into the long-term effects of COVID-19 on lung function and patient outcomes.
