China owns 378,000 AI patents, rising faster than global average

China has amassed 378,000 AI patents by the end of 2023, with a growth rate exceeding 40 percent annually, as reported by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA). This growth rate surpasses the global average, showcasing China's dominance in AI innovation. The digital economy in China is thriving, with core industries contributing significantly to the country's GDP.

In 2023, China's core digital economy industries saw 406,000 invention patents approved, accounting for 45 percent of the total granted patents in the country. The average annual growth rate over the past five years stood at 21 percent, indicating a strong trend of technological innovation. Foreign enterprises are also actively obtaining patents in China's digital economy sectors, with 93 countries holding valid invention patents in these industries.
