Can self-driving cars reduce city traffic? They can, study shows

Self-driving cars have the potential to significantly improve traffic flow in urban areas. A recent study indicates that these robotic vehicles can optimize traffic efficiency, safety, and energy consumption, even when sharing the road with human-driven cars. The research utilized AI algorithms to manage mixed traffic systems, demonstrating that a small percentage of robot vehicles can eliminate traffic jams.

The study employed reinforcement learning to develop algorithms that allow robot vehicles to communicate and coordinate with each other, enhancing overall traffic management. Results showed that with just 5% of traffic being robot vehicles, congestion could be eradicated, and at 60%, traffic efficiency surpassed traditional traffic light systems. This research paves the way for future advancements in autonomous transportation, aiming for effective citywide traffic control.
