AI tech improves biodiversity across Ribena's blackcurrant farms

Suntory Beverage and Food GB&I (SBF GB&I) has utilized artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance biodiversity on its blackcurrant farms by monitoring the birds in hedgerows. The project, in collaboration with the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) South West, collected data on key bird species across five farms supplying Ribena. The initiative found an average of 58 different bird species per farm, with some hosting up to 63 species.

The AI analysis and recording technology identified common species like wrens, robins, and dunnocks, as well as more elusive ones, contributing to a comprehensive understanding of the habitats. Among the 83 species recorded, 15 were UK red list birds and 17 were from the amber list, including priority species such as the bullfinch and skylark. SBF GB&I's Farm Stewardship Scheme, part of the 'Six Point Plan,' focuses on enhancing farmland habitats and species protection to create more resilient farms.
