Kenya's creative industry is facing challenges with the increasing use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies, which are both enhancing and threatening the sector. The industry directly employs around 5,600 Kenyans and has been growing at a rate of about five percent annually. The rise of AI presents a unique challenge to creatives as they navigate its benefits and potential negative impacts.
A survey conducted by Creative Garage in Nairobi revealed that 75.2 percent of Kenyan artists are actively using AI in their creative work. Popular AI tools among creatives include large-language models like ChatGPT and generative platforms such as Dall-E2 and Midjourney. AI is being utilized for idea generation, concept development, text generation, visualizations, research, marketing, music composition, translation, and more.
