AI detects cancer with 17% more accuracy than doctors: UCLA study

A new study from UCLA revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) is more effective than doctors in detecting prostate cancer, with an accuracy rate of 84% compared to 67% for physicians. The AI tool, Unfold AI developed by Avenda Health in California, utilizes an algorithm to assess the likelihood of cancer based on various clinical data types. The study involved a team of urologists and radiologists analyzing cases where tumors were removed to identify residual cancer.

The AI-detected cases showed a significantly lower 'negative margin rate,' indicating a reduced chance of cancer cells being left behind after surgery. Dr. Ali Kasraeian, a urologist at Kasraeian Urology, highlighted the benefits of using AI technology in personalized cancer care and treatment decision-making. The findings suggest that AI could lead to more precise diagnoses and targeted treatments, potentially minimizing the need for extensive procedures and their associated side effects.
