AI could help GPs pinpoint patients at risk of dying from heart problems

Artificial intelligence has the potential to assist general practitioners in identifying patients at high risk of heart-related conditions, including kidney failure and diabetes. A study conducted by the University of Leeds utilized an AI system named Optimise, which analyzed health records from over two million individuals. This innovative approach could enable earlier treatment, thereby alleviating some of the pressures faced by the NHS.

The AI system identified over 416,000 individuals as high-risk, representing a significant portion of heart-related deaths. In a pilot study, many patients were found to have undiagnosed chronic kidney disease, highlighting the system's effectiveness in uncovering hidden health issues. Future clinical trials are planned to further explore the benefits of AI in enhancing patient care and reducing healthcare costs.
