AI technology is being harnessed to develop a non-invasive diagnostic tool for coronary artery disease (CAD) through tongue imaging. Researchers from Beijing University of Chinese Medicine and Hunan University of Chinese Medicine have created an algorithm that utilizes tongue images to enhance CAD diagnosis. This innovative approach aims to provide a safer and more cost-effective alternative to traditional coronary angiography, which is invasive and expensive.
The study highlights the integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) principles with modern AI techniques, emphasizing the tongue's diagnostic value. By employing machine learning algorithms, particularly the ResNet-18 network, the researchers achieved over 99% accuracy in diagnosing CAD using tongue features. This research not only opens new avenues for CAD detection but also suggests that tongue images could serve as new risk indicators for the disease.
