African Union approves Continental AI Strategy to boost adoption and development

The African Union (AU) has endorsed a new “Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy” aimed at accelerating the integration of AI in the member countries. The strategy outlines specific measures to integrate AI into the public and private sectors. The AU’s AI strategy was endorsed during the 45th Ordinary Session of the AU Executive Council in Accra, Ghana.

The Continental Artificial Intelligence Strategy proposes the establishment of a new hardware-software infrastructure to support AI and machine learning processes in Africa. It also focuses on enhancing AI governance frameworks and aligning AI with the AU’s Agenda 2063 and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Six African countries already have independent AI strategies, while others are in the process of developing their AI policies.
